Community Checkmate was founded by 5th grader Carter Glatt as a youth empowerment initiative dedicated to bringing the game of chess to underserved urban communities. We believe chess is more than a game, it’s a tool for critical thinking, confidence, and connection.
By setting up local chess programs in schools and community centers, we provide students with access to mentorship and educational resources to pursue the passion of chess. Each move on the board mirrors the decisions young people face in life: think ahead, stay patient, and never give up after a setback, both in and out of the class room.
Our mission is to create spaces where kids can pursue their passion for chess and learn that their next great move can start in their own community, on a chessboard.
Community Checkmate uses chess to teach strategy, focus, and resilience in underserved communities. It gives kids a safe space to think critically, build confidence, and connect with mentors. Every move made on the board helps prepare for smarter moves in life.
